Wild Arms XF is a tactical role-playing game for PSP, shifting the series from turn-based party battles to grid-based strategy combat. You control a squad on hexagonal maps, moving units, considering facing and terrain, and completing objectives that often go beyond simply defeating every enemy. Characters use a class system, and jobs can be changed and developed to alter available skills and equipment. The story follows Clarissa Arwin, a young woman drawn into political conflict, and retains the series' mix of fantasy and Western elements, including firearms called ARMs. Presentation uses hand-drawn character portraits over 3D battlefields, with story scenes between missions. As with other entries, the setting is the world of Filgaia, though the tale stands on its own.
