WWF SmackDown brings late-1990s WWF wrestling to the PlayStation with fast, arcade-leaning controls rather than a slow simulation pace. Matches use a simple grapple and strike system that keeps action moving, with momentum building toward finishing moves. You can fight in singles, tag and multi-wrestler matches, brawl outside the ring, and use objects found around the arena. A season mode strings matches together into ongoing feuds and title chases across weekly shows and pay-per-views, while a create-a-wrestler mode lets you build an original character by adjusting appearance, moves and entrance details. Multiplayer supports several players in the ring at once, and the roster is drawn from the WWF talent of the era. The presentation leans on entrance videos, crowd noise and commentary to mirror the television product.
