X-Men: Children of the Atom is Capcom's conversion of its arcade fighting game for the PlayStation. It is a one-on-one 2D fighter built on large, heavily animated sprites, with X-Men and their enemies as the roster, including Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Colossus, Psylocke, Silver Samurai, Spiral, Omega Red, Sentinel and Juggernaut. Alongside standard special moves, characters have hyper-level super attacks fuelled by a meter, plus super jumps, air combos and chain combos that keep fights moving vertically as well as across the screen. Stages are destructible in places and the backgrounds are drawn in a bright comic-book style. Modes cover single-player progression against the computer, two-player versus and practice options. The engine's high-flying combo system laid groundwork for Capcom's later Marvel fighting games.
