X-Men: The Official Game is a third-person action game that connects the events of the X-Men films, filling in story between them. Play alternates between three characters with distinct styles: Wolverine fights up close with claw combos and a healing factor, Iceman moves along ice slides in high-speed flight sections, and Nightcrawler teleports through levels to strike enemies from behind and reach otherwise inaccessible spots. Levels are built around each character's abilities, mixing combat encounters with traversal and boss fights, and cutscenes carry the plot forward between missions. Defeating enemies and completing objectives earns points that go toward upgrading attacks and abilities. The PlayStation 2 release includes voice work from cast members associated with the films and presents its story through in-engine sequences between stages.
