Burnout is an arcade racing game for the Xbox in which you race along public roads shared with regular traffic. Instead of closed tracks, courses take you through city streets, suburbs and highways where buses, vans and cars move in both directions. Driving dangerously is the reward system: heading into oncoming lanes, tailgating and near misses fill a boost meter you can burn for speed, so hanging in traffic pays off more than playing safe. Collisions are rendered as slow-motion crashes that bring your run to a halt and hand the lead to your rivals. The game offers single races and a championship ladder that unlocks further cars and courses, along with split-screen play for two. Cars handle in a heavy, drift-prone arcade style, and reading traffic ahead is the main skill.
