Hoops is a basketball game for the NES built around street-style play rather than full league simulation. Games are contested on a half court, with small-sided matchups instead of full five-a-side teams, so shooting, driving and defending happen in a tight space. You choose from a roster of playground characters, each with different ratings in areas such as speed, shooting and dunking, which shapes how you approach a matchup. Play supports competition against the computer or against another person with a second controller. The presentation is simple, with a single-screen court view and straightforward controls for shooting, passing and stealing. Matches are short, and success comes from learning your chosen player's strengths, working the ball into good positions and defending the basket when possession changes.
