Mobile Light Force is the North American release of the vertical scrolling shooter known in Japan as Gunbird. You pick one of several anime-styled characters, each with a different flight speed, shot pattern and special attack, then fly upward through stages filled with enemy formations, aerial gunfire and large mid-level and end-of-level bosses. Power-ups upgrade your main weapon, while stored bombs and magic-style screen attacks clear out dense waves when you are cornered. Between stages, short character scenes and dialogue frame the fantasy setting. The game supports two players at once, with both ships on screen sharing the same scrolling battlefield. Play is score-driven and built around memorising enemy patterns and finding safe paths through bullet-filled screens across a run that can be finished in one sitting.
