NHL 97 is an entry in EA Sports' long-running hockey series, built around the NHL and NHLPA licenses so you play with real teams and real player names. Games run five-on-five with the usual rules in place: offsides, icing, penalties and power plays, with options to adjust or switch them off depending on how simulation-minded you want the match to be. You can play a quick exhibition, take a team through a season, or head straight into the playoffs, and the PlayStation version supports multiplayer matches for head-to-head games. Fighting, checking and one-timers are all part of the on-ice repertoire, and line changes and player stats sit behind the action for those who want to manage them. Commentary and crowd audio accompany the play.
