NHL 99 on PlayStation is an entry in EA Sports' licensed hockey series, using NHL and NHLPA rights for real teams and named players. Matches are played five-on-five with adjustable rules for penalties, offsides and icing, along with settings for period length and difficulty. Exhibition games, full seasons and playoff runs are available, and multiplayer supports head-to-head play. Body checking, fights and power plays are part of the on-ice flow, while menu screens handle line-ups, trades, player ratings and season statistics. The game renders the rink in 3D with selectable camera angles, and commentary and arena audio run alongside the action. The control scheme covers passing, shooting, dekes and one-timers for players who want more than simple end-to-end rushes.
