Punky Skunk is a side-scrolling platformer for the original PlayStation starring an anthropomorphic skunk. Levels are built from 2D platforming layouts rendered with cartoon-styled character art and colourful backdrops, and you run, jump and attack your way through them while collecting items and dealing with enemies along the route. The game mixes in equipment and vehicles that change how Punky moves, so some stretches play differently from standard running and jumping. Each stage ends with a goal to reach, and boss encounters punctuate progress. The tone is bright and family-friendly throughout, in keeping with the mascot platformers that were common on the console. It is a fairly traditional example of the genre, focused on level navigation and timing.
