Railroad Tycoon II is a business and construction simulation, adapted for the PlayStation from the PC original. You build and run a railway company: laying track between towns and industries, placing stations and depots, buying locomotives from a roster of historical engines, and setting the routes and cargo each train carries. Profit comes from moving passengers, mail and goods such as coal, livestock and manufactured products to the places that demand them, while you manage maintenance costs, terrain and grades that slow trains down. A financial layer lets you issue bonds, buy and sell shares and take over competing companies. The game includes scenario-based campaigns set in different regions and eras with specific objectives, along with free-form play. The console version remaps the interface for a controller, using cursor-driven menus and map views.
