Rayman is a 2D side-scrolling platformer in which you control a limbless hero whose hands and feet float unattached to his body. You run, climb, hang from ledges and use Rayman's fist as a ranged attack, throwing it at enemies and at switches placed out of reach. New abilities are unlocked as you progress, including the ability to grip onto flying rings and to use his hair as a helicopter to slow a fall. The goal across each world is to free the captured Electoons hidden in cages, which are often tucked behind hazards or optional side routes. Levels are hand-drawn with layered painted backdrops and cover themes such as forests, music-inspired stages and caverns. Difficulty comes from precise jumping, tight timing and boss encounters at the end of each area.
