Heroes of Might and Magic II on Game Boy Color is a turn-based fantasy strategy game. You move heroes around a map to gather resources, seize mines and capture towns, then use what you collect to construct buildings and hire creature armies. When two forces meet, the game shifts to a separate tactical battle on a grid, where you order stacks of units, use ranged and melee attacks, and cast spells through your hero. Heroes level up, learn skills and equip artifacts found on the map, so protecting them matters as much as building a strong army. Different town types offer their own creature lineups, encouraging different strategies. Scenarios are played out one map at a time and can run long, with save support letting you return to a campaign in progress on the handheld.
