Legend of the River King is a fishing role-playing game for Game Boy Color. You travel on foot through countryside made up of rivers, ponds, fields and mountain paths, choosing where to cast and which lures or bait to use. Hooking a fish starts a tug-of-war struggle where you manage line tension and reel in without letting the fish break free. Caught fish can be sold or kept, and money goes toward better rods, tackle and equipment. Away from the water you encounter wandering animals and insects in simple battles, and you rest and restock in towns. The world is presented from an overhead perspective with a light story frame giving you a reason to keep travelling and searching out bigger catches in new fishing spots.
