Shenmue is an adventure game for the Sega Dreamcast. You play as Ryo Hazuki, a young martial artist in Yokosuka, Japan, who sets out to find the man who killed his father and took a mysterious mirror from the family dojo. The game recreates its neighbourhoods in detail, with shops, homes and streets you can enter, townspeople who follow their own daily routines, and a clock, calendar and changing weather that affect what is open and who is around. Progress comes from asking questions, following leads and waiting for events to happen at set times. Combat uses a free-fighting system with martial arts moves and throws, while cinematic sequences call for quick-timed button presses. Side activities include part-time work, arcade machines, capsule toys and collecting.
