The Sega Saturn version of Brain Dead 13 is an interactive cartoon presented entirely in hand-drawn animation. You control Lance Galahad, a computer repairman who takes a job at an isolated castle and ends up pursued through it by Fritz, an axe-carrying butler, while a mad scientist schemes overhead. Gameplay is reaction-based: scenes play out as animation, and you input a direction or button at the correct moment to dodge, jump, climb or escape. Mistimed inputs trigger elaborate cartoon death sequences, after which you retry the hazard. Between set pieces you pick which exits and passages to take, mapping out the castle as you go. The tone is comic horror throughout, with voice work and full-screen animation in place of conventional sprite graphics, so the challenge lies in learning each scene's timing.
