Metal Slug is a run-and-gun action game, brought to the Sega Saturn from its Neo Geo original. You control a soldier who runs, jumps and shoots through side-scrolling stages packed with enemy infantry, vehicles and artillery, rescuing prisoners of war who reward you with new weapons and grenades. Special guns such as the heavy machine gun, shotgun and rocket launcher have limited ammunition, so you cycle back to the default pistol when they run dry. The recurring Metal Slug tank can be boarded to add cannon fire and a crushing melee attack, and abandoned when it takes too much damage. Presentation is hand-drawn and heavily animated, with cartoonish explosions and detailed sprite work. Boss fights close out the stages.
