Mr. Bones is an action game for the Sega Saturn in which you control a skeleton who claws his way out of the grave. Play is split across a long series of short, varied stages rather than one repeated format, so alongside side-scrolling platforming and combat you take on sequences with different rules and control schemes, including segments where Mr. Bones plays guitar. The presentation mixes pre-rendered backdrops with a blues-driven soundtrack, and cutscenes carry the story between chapters. Losing and reassembling parts of the skeleton's body is worked into the humour and the challenge. Because each stage introduces something new, the game leans more toward constant variety than mastering a single set of mechanics.
