Tempest 2000 is an update of the classic tube shooter. You control a claw-shaped ship that travels around the rim of a geometric playfield, firing down into the tube at enemies that climb toward you. Levels are a series of differently shaped webs, some closed loops and some open lines, and clearing one warps you into the next. Power-ups add extra firepower, a jump that lets you clear the rim, and a droid companion that fights alongside you. The visuals lean on bright vector-style shapes and heavy particle effects, and the game is paired with a driving electronic soundtrack. Play is score-focused, with chained kills and bonus stages rewarding aggressive play. The Sega Saturn version keeps the arcade-style structure of the original design.
