Virtual Hydlide is a Sega Saturn action role-playing game based on the Hydlide series. It reworks the earlier games into a 3D world explored from behind the character, with combat handled in real time as you approach enemies and swing your weapon rather than through menus. You travel between forests, caves, dungeons and towns, gathering equipment and items, raising your character's strength and working towards rescuing a captured princess. Enemies and characters are rendered using digitised sprites placed in polygonal environments, giving the game a distinctive look for the period. Dungeon layouts and item placement are generated so that they differ between playthroughs. Health and fatigue must be managed while exploring, and saving is handled at set points.
