Based on Todd McFarlane's Spawn comics, this Dreamcast title is an arena action game played from a third-person view. Rather than long linear levels, matches take place in enclosed stages where you fight enemies using melee attacks, firearms and special abilities, moving freely around the arena to line up shots and dodge incoming fire. A roster of characters drawn from the comic's cast can be used, each with their own weapons and attack styles, and additional fighters and stages are unlocked through play. Modes include single-player missions and multiplayer bouts, so several players can compete in the same arena on one console. The presentation leans on the dark, gothic look of the source material, with Spawn's cape and chains featuring in his attacks. Controls are geared toward fast movement and constant shooting rather than deliberate exploration.
