The Visual Memory Unit is a memory card accessory for the Sega Dreamcast. It slots into a port on the front of the Dreamcast controller and stores game saves, but unlike a plain memory card it has its own monochrome LCD screen, a directional pad and buttons, plus a battery compartment so it can be used away from the console. While a game is running, the VMU's screen faces the player through the controller and can display secondary information such as status readouts or in-game prompts. Some Dreamcast titles include small downloadable minigames or side features that transfer to the unit and run on it independently, with data carried back to the main game afterwards. Two VMUs can also be connected directly to exchange data.
