After Burner II is a home conversion of Sega's arcade jet combat game for the Genesis. You sit behind a fighter jet in a third-person view, flying forward at high speed while enemy aircraft stream toward you from the horizon. Your controls cover banking, rolling, and the afterburner, and you fight with a machine gun for close targets and lock-on missiles for anything your reticle catches. Stages run one after another with no let-up, and between some of them your plane touches down or refuels before the action resumes. There is no free-roaming flight here; the game is built around reflexes, pattern recognition, and dodging dense clusters of incoming missiles. Missile stock is limited, so you learn when to fire and when to weave.
