Unlike the earlier games in the series, Double Dragon V is a one-on-one versus fighting game rather than a scrolling beat 'em up. You pick a fighter from a roster that includes Billy and Jimmy Lee alongside a range of other characters, then fight single rounds in themed arenas using punches, kicks, throws and special moves performed with directional inputs. Modes cover single matches against the computer, head-to-head play against another person, and a story-driven progression through a sequence of opponents on the way to a final boss. The presentation draws on the animated series look, with cartoon-styled character art and backgrounds. Matches are decided by depleting an opponent's health bar within the round timer on this Sega Genesis release.
