Gain Ground is a conversion of Sega's arcade game, blending action and strategy on a single screen. Each stage is a fixed arena, and your goal is to move your characters to the exit rather than simply clear all enemies. You control one member of a growing squad at a time, and each has a distinct attack: some fire straight ahead, others lob projectiles over obstacles, and some are only useful at close range. Choosing the right character for the terrain is the core of the game. If a character falls, they drop where they died and can be rescued by carrying them to the exit with another fighter, adding them back to your roster. Two players can work through stages together, and levels grow more crowded and maze-like as you advance.
