Gargoyles is a side-scrolling action platformer for the Sega Genesis based on the Disney animated series. You play as Goliath, the winged gargoyle leader, moving through stages set in the distant past and in modern New York. Goliath fights with claw attacks and can pick up and throw enemies, and his climbing ability is central to the level design: he grips walls and ceilings, scaling and traversing surfaces rather than relying only on jumps. He can also glide across long gaps once airborne, which the stages use for descents and for reaching otherwise unreachable ledges. Levels feature vertical architecture, hazards and boss encounters tied to the show's antagonists, with cutscene panels linking the chapters of the story. The graphics use large character sprites and dark, gothic backdrops in keeping with the series.
