Herzog Zwei is a real-time strategy game played from an overhead view of a scrolling battlefield. Rather than issuing orders through menus, you directly pilot a transforming craft that shifts between a flying form for fast travel and a walking mech form for combat. You buy units at your base, carry them to the front line, drop them with a standing order, and let them act on their own while you reposition, resupply, and defend. Victory comes from taking neutral outposts to expand your income and reach, then breaking through to destroy the opponent's main base. Fuel and repairs must be managed by returning to friendly bases. A two-player split-screen mode lets both sides fight simultaneously, and the single-player campaign pits you against the computer across a series of maps.
