Mystic Defender is a side-scrolling action game for the Sega Genesis. You play as Joe Yamato, a young fighter with magical powers, working through stages to rescue the kidnapped Princess Alexandra from a cult. Instead of a sword or gun, your main attack is spellcasting: tapping the button fires a small bolt, while holding it charges a stronger, wider blast that can clear groups of enemies or damage bosses more quickly. Managing that charge time against incoming attacks is the core of the combat. Levels move through varied settings and end with large boss encounters, and you can find items that boost your health and magic. The game uses a fantasy-horror art style, with detailed backgrounds and sizeable enemy sprites, and difficulty that ramps up in the later stages.
