Populous on the Sega Genesis is a strategy game in which you act as a deity rather than a single character. Your followers settle on the land and multiply, but they can only build on flat ground, so most of your effort goes into raising and lowering terrain tile by tile to create room for them to expand. As your population grows, so does your divine power, unlocking effects you can unleash on the rival god's followers, such as swamps, earthquakes and floods. Each level is a separate world, and the goal is to grow your side strong enough to overwhelm the opposition and take the map. Play is slow-building and methodical: you shape the ground, watch your settlements expand, and pick your moment to strike.
