Prince of Persia on Genesis is a side-scrolling action platformer set in a palace of dungeons, corridors and towers. You move a prince past spike pits, swinging blades, loose floor tiles and gates opened by pressure plates, and confront guards in sword fights built around stepping in, parrying and striking. The prince animates with deliberate weight, so running jumps and ledge grabs have to be judged in advance. Potions hidden through the levels restore health or lengthen your life bar, while a time limit applies pressure over the entire quest. Rooms function as puzzles as often as obstacle courses, regularly requiring you to hit a switch and then hurry back the way you came. The Genesis release adapts the original's visuals and music to Sega's 16-bit hardware.
