Universal Soldier is a side-scrolling action game for the Sega Genesis, tied to the film of the same name. You move through multi-directional stages as a heavily armed soldier, shooting waves of enemies, destroying emplacements and searching out the exit. The engine is built on the Turrican style of run-and-gun design, with sprawling levels that reward exploration, a rapid-fire main weapon, secondary weapon pickups that change your firepower, and screen-clearing attacks held in reserve. Levels include vertical climbs, tight corridors and open outdoor areas, and end in larger boss fights against machinery and armoured enemies. Extra lives, energy and weapon upgrades are hidden in destructible scenery, so sweeping fire across the environment is often worthwhile. Controls use a standard Genesis pad.
