Cliffhanger for the Sega Genesis is a side-scrolling action game based on the mountain-rescue action film. You take the role of a climber working through snowy mountain stages, caves and structures while fighting armed criminals with punches, kicks and jumping attacks. Movement includes climbing and ledge work alongside standard platforming, and stages present hazards such as gaps, falling debris and slippery footing in addition to enemies. Health is limited and enemies arrive steadily, so managing crowds and positioning matters. Levels are linear, moving toward an exit or a confrontation at the end of each section, with brief story screens connecting the action to the film's plot. The presentation uses detailed sprite backdrops of alpine settings and a chiptune score, in the mold of early-1990s licensed Genesis action games.
