Columns is a falling-block puzzle game for the Sega Genesis. Groups of three coloured jewels drop into a narrow well, and you can cycle the order of the jewels within each column as it falls. Lining up three or more of the same colour horizontally, vertically or diagonally clears them, and pieces above collapse into the gaps, which makes chain reactions possible. Magic jewels appear occasionally and wipe every gem matching the colour they land on. Play speeds up as you progress, and the game continues until the well fills to the top. Modes include a solo endurance game and a two-player split-screen match where clearing lots of jewels dumps junk on your opponent's side. The look and music draw on an ancient Mediterranean theme.
