Shadow Squadron is a space combat game for the Sega 32X, using the add-on's extra processing power for flat-shaded polygon graphics. You pilot a fighter through a series of mission-based stages, taking on enemy craft, capital ships and installations in open space and around larger structures. Each mission gives you objectives to complete, and you switch between weapon types as you engage targets at different ranges. The view can be changed between cockpit and external chase perspectives, and radar and targeting displays help you track enemies outside your field of vision. Movement is free in all directions rather than confined to a rail, so lining up attack runs and managing your position relative to larger ships is part of the challenge. A second player can take part in a cooperative arrangement.
