Steel Talons is a helicopter combat game brought to the Sega Genesis from Atari's polygonal arcade original. You fly an attack helicopter from a cockpit view, using a flight model that requires you to manage throttle, altitude and orientation rather than simply steering. Missions send you over 3D landscapes to destroy ground targets and enemy aircraft while avoiding return fire and terrain. The visuals use flat-shaded polygons for the ground, structures and vehicles, giving the game an unusual look among Genesis titles. Training runs and progressively harder combat sorties build up your handling of the aircraft, and taking too much damage or hitting the ground ends the run. It sits between arcade shooter and flight simulation, asking for more careful piloting than a typical scrolling action game.
