Thunder Force III is a horizontally scrolling shooter for the Sega Genesis. You pilot a starfighter through stages set across several planetary environments, with the early levels selectable in the order you prefer before the game moves into its later sequence. The ship carries multiple weapons that you cycle between with a button press, ranging from forward shots to spread and rear fire, and additional weapon types are recovered from power-ups during play. Speed can also be adjusted on the fly to suit tight corridors or open space. Levels feature varied terrain hazards such as fire, lava and undersea passages, and each ends with a boss encounter. Losing a life costs you your current weapon loadout, so survival and stock management are central to progress.
