ToeJam and Earl is an exploration game for the Sega Genesis starring two aliens stranded on Earth after crashing their ship. You wander a stack of floating island levels searching for the scattered pieces of the spacecraft, riding elevators upward as you find them. Levels are viewed from an overhead angle and can be randomly generated, so layouts differ between playthroughs. Much of the game revolves around presents whose contents are unknown until opened, ranging from rocket skates and extra lives to hazards that work against you. Earthlings such as nerds with hedge clippers and hula dancers wander the islands and must be avoided or outrun. Two players can play cooperatively, with a split screen that joins together when the characters are close.
