Valis III is a side-scrolling action game in which you fight through themed stages using a sword, magic and special attacks. The story is told between levels through anime-style cutscenes with portrait art and dialogue, following Yuko as she is drawn back into a conflict between worlds. Rather than a single fighter, the game lets you swap between multiple playable heroines, each with her own weapon reach and abilities, so you can pick whoever suits the stretch of level in front of you. Enemies drop items that restore health and power up your attacks, and stages close with boss encounters. Play is straightforward run, jump and slash platforming with an emphasis on timing your strikes and managing your magic meter across longer stages.
