Virtua Fighter 2 on the Sega Genesis is a home take on Sega's 3D fighting series built for 16-bit hardware. Rather than reproducing the polygon graphics of the arcade and Saturn versions, this version uses sprite-based characters fighting on a 2D plane. Matches are one on one, round based, and use punch, kick and guard controls with throws and sweeps, and rounds can be won by knocking an opponent out of the ring as well as by depleting their health. The roster draws on the series' cast of martial artists, each with their own style and moves. Options cover versus play against a second player and single player matches against the computer. It is a distinct interpretation of Virtua Fighter 2 rather than a direct port.
