Virtua Racing on Sega Genesis is a polygonal 3D racing game converted from Sega's arcade original. The cartridge contains an additional processor chip that handles the 3D calculations, allowing the console to render flat-shaded polygon cars and track geometry with a full sense of depth. You drive open-wheel Formula-style cars, choosing between automatic and manual transmission and cycling through multiple camera viewpoints, including an in-car view and pulled-back external angles. Racing is against a field of AI opponents on timed circuits, with checkpoints extending the clock as you pass them. A two-player split-screen option is included. Handling emphasises braking into corners and holding a clean racing line rather than aggressive contact, and lap times are the main measure of progress.
