Wardner is a side-scrolling action platformer originally from the arcades. You play a young hero pursuing an evil wizard who has abducted his companion, travelling through forests, caves, castles and other fantasy locations. The main attack is a projectile you throw at oncoming enemies, and power-ups collected along the way increase its strength and range. Shops let you spend gathered money on items and upgrades between stretches of action, adding a small amount of resource management to the run-and-jump gameplay. Levels are built around precise jumping across platforms and ledges while dealing with respawning creatures, and each area ends with a boss encounter that requires learning an attack pattern. The presentation uses colourful storybook fantasy backdrops and cartoon-styled enemy sprites.
