WeaponLord is a one-on-one fighting game for the Sega Genesis set in a dark fantasy world where every combatant fights with a weapon. Characters are barbarians, beasts and warriors rendered as large sprites, and matches involve blade clashes, drawing blood and decapitation-style finishing blows. The combat system emphasizes defensive play: you can parry and counter incoming attacks, and thrust blocking allows you to interrupt an opponent mid-strike, alongside combos, special moves and command-based finishers. Single-player play moves through a series of opponents with story sequences, and two players can fight head to head. Move inputs are complex compared with many console fighters of the period, with lengthy command strings for the more elaborate techniques. The game also appeared on other 16-bit hardware.
